The first few years of observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have exceeded expectations, with discoveries of what may be the long-sought seeds of supermassive black holes and of some truly compelling Population III candidate galaxies.  I will review the theory of the formation of the first stars and black holes, highlighting where pre-JWST predictions are consistent with the new discoveries and where the observations are now driving rapid refinement of the existing theory.
