Randomness for quantum sensing

Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss two distinct settings where randomness can be used as a resource for quantum sensing. First, I will discuss how random symmetric probe states can be used as rotosensors---quantum sensors that yield optimal sensitivity to rotations about an arbitrary axis [arXiv:2602.23332]. Second, I will consider the problem of function estimation, where the goal is to optimally measure some function of local parameters, each coupled to its own sensor in a network of, potentially entangled, quantum sensors. In this setting, instead of considering random probe states we consider random controls during the encoding process. In particular, we find that a Q-DRIFT style protocol (i.e. randomized Trotterization) enables this problem to be solved for arbitrary commuting generators in the presence of unwanted noise terms [arXiv:2510.06360], and for arbitrary, possibly non-commuting, generators [arXiv:2605.04136].
