Rare decays of neutral B mesons and 4D-Trackers

The rare decays B^0→μμ and Bs^0→μμ are suppressed in the Standard Model (SM). Deviations from the SM prediction would point towards new physics. The latest experimental precision for Bs^0→μμ is ~15% and the B^0→μμ decay has not yet been observed. I will present the ATLAS Run 2 measurement of these decays using 140 fb^-1 of p-p collision data. Currently, these measurements are statistically limited. The high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) is expected to deliver 3000 fb^-1 of p-p collision data which will enable precision measurements of these decays. To maintain high quality data taking at the HL-LHC, significant R&D is needed to develop sensors with excellent time resolution. I will present recent work on developing detectors, called 4D-Trackers, with precise time and position resolution.
