Milad Houshmand CharmkhoranPlease join Milad for his seminar on research. The Mind Research Network Library is located in the Pete and Nancy Domenici Hall adjacent to the UNM North Golf Course, 1101 Yale Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106 (please use the north entrance of the building).

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique that measures the brain’s magnetic fields with millisecond precision. This presentation will explore how physics enables this powerful tool, starting from Maxwell’s equations and the quasi-static approximation, deriving the Biot–Savart law, and introducing the current dipole model of neuronal activity.

We will discuss the physics behind Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs), which detect femto-tesla level magnetic signals, and examine how forward and inverse problem-solving frameworks allow us to map brain activity in space and time. The talk will conclude with insights into clinical applications of MEG and emerging technologies such as on-scalp sensors and optically pumped magnetometers.

This session aims to bridge theoretical physics and practical neuroscience, offering a comprehensive understanding of how fundamental electromagnetic principles support cutting-edge brain research.

All are welcome to attend.
