Detectors able to resolve vector directionality of events are uniquely suited for searches of rare phenomena, from dark matter to non-standard neutrino interactions. The Migdal effect contains an inherently directional topology making it an ideal application for such detectors. In this talk I will give a status of the MIGDAL experiment, which is searching for the Migdal effect using a low pressure Optical TPC based in the UK. I will briefly introduce simulation studies I am running which probe the detection efficiency we have with the current MIGDAL setup. I will show how decreasing diffusion (using something like negative ion (NI) drift) can boost our ability to see the illusive Migdal electrons. To this end, I will also discuss the use of a negative ion TPC (NI-TPC) to push beyond the current scope of MIGDAL, describing studies conducted on gases optimized for a novel NI-TPC and providing an update on its construction. In addition, I will highlight its potential applications that extend beyond the Migdal search to other directional investigations.
