Cosmological observations have been extensively exploited to constrain the sum of the masses of neutrinos, providing the most stringent constraint up to date on this parameter. However, cosmological data holds the potential also to constrain other neutrino properties. In this talk, I will discuss how the free-streaming phase of neutrinos enables a test of new physics in the neutrino sector. In particular, I will show that cosmology can constrain possible self-interactions among neutrinos. Finally, I will present constraints obtained using the cosmic microwave background and the large-scale distribution of galaxies data, discussing how these constraints hint at new physics in the early Universe.
