Black holes, Information, and the Holographic Principle

In the last few decades, deep connections between gravity and quantum information have been uncovered. In this talk, we begin by discussing the relationship between the physics of black holes as described by Einstein’s general theory, and the laws of thermodynamics. Building on this, we find general relationships between the theory of gravity and the physics of information. These are used to motivate several important results in semiclassical quantum gravity: The generalized 2nd law of thermodynamics, the quantum null energy condition, the quantum singularity theorem, etc. These point towards a general “holographic principle” which states that the physics of a spacetime region is “encoded” on its boundary.
